The Cosmic Mass experience blends the elements of dance and live music, with ritual and ceremony.

The Cosmic Mass is innovative and inclusive, drawing inspiration from ecstatic dance and global spiritual traditions. These elements, along with Cosmic Mass themes, attract a variety of ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Unbound from specific dogmas or rigid rules, the Cosmic Mass serves:

  • those who may see themselves as ‘spiritual but not religious’ (‘SBNR’);

  • are looking to incorporate new ways to deepen a connection to Earth;

  • want embodiment practices to help shake the worry and anxietyout of the body.

Unlike regular worship services, the Cosmic Mass replaces pulpits and pews with a dance floor — and encourages “sweating your prayers” through movement, music and visual imagery.

The Cosmic Mass brings spirit and art together, offering all ages a way into joyful celebration of Creation via post-modern art forms including movement, live music, puppets, masks, costumes and altars.

Matthew Fox, radical theologian and popularizer of Creation Spirituality, was inspired in 1992 to begin holding his own series of “Techno Cosmic Masses” in Oakland, CA.

These events were designed to connect people to a more ecstatic and visceral celebration and relationship with ritual and community building.
