Magnus and Circe at the Summer Solstice Ceremony in Payson Park, Portland, 2023.

Ritual Lab regularly hosts public, co-created, seasonal ceremonial celebrations, held by Eco Chaplain Circe Moss MacDonald in partnership with Druid Priest Magnus deRhuddlan.

Ritual Lab presents The Cosmic Mass ceremony to express awe, gratitude, and joy for the beauty of all creation. We hope to ease the pain of anxiety, distraction, and numbness off our souls and spirits; and give expression to the grief of our day and age. We’ll stir our creativity together, and cultivate refreshed energy to engage with the needs of our Earth and All Beings.

The Cosmic Mass is a ceremony created by Rev. Dr. Matthew Fox, based on the Interspiritual teachings of Creation Spirituality, which honors all paths of spiritual expression and the science that illuminates the intricate interconnectivity of the cosmos. The Great Turning, Joanna Macy’s teachings, are woven into the Mass, too.

“Mass” means a gathering, “to amass” with no religious meaning assigned. While The Cosmic Mass has spiritual content, it does not contain any dogma, scripture, or religious teachings. The intention is for the participants to come away with a sense of awe for the interconnectedness of all beings. There is a grief ritual contained in the ceremony; we hope to help metabolize our grief (personal, communal, planetary) using sound, song, and silence to find and express our sadness. We use movement and music to tap into our creativity, then we complete the ceremony with questions centering on action, justice, and transformation.
